Family Friendly Fun in Satellite Beach

Satellite Beach is perfectly placed on the Space Coast of Florida, in Brevard County on the beautiful barrier island between the sparkling Atlantic Ocean and the scenic Indian River. Sitting between Cocoa Beach and Melbourne, Satellite Beach is in easy reach of locals and visitors who enjoy the arts, history, and nature. Satellite Beach is charming and beautiful with loads of family friendly fun to enjoy. Let’s explore!

Pelican Beach Park is among the most visited parks in Satellite Beach. This amazing beach park is open every day from 9:00 a.m. until sunset and features free onsite parking. The incredible stretch of beach is perfect for sunning and swimming, but also offers a playground for the little ones, beach volleyball courts for the entire family, and covered pavilions when it’s time to eat!

You’ll need a boat to enjoy Samsons Island which is located between the Banana and Indian Rivers. Never fear, if you don’t have a boat, you can enjoy the Island on Sunday, when the city offers free ferry service to the Island which leaves from the local fire department. A visit to Samsons Island means a return to nature, where native flora and fauna abound. Visitors to the Island can enjoy bird watching, hiking along the nature trails, fishing, and picnicking.

Canova Beach Park boasts ten beach acres of pet friendly fun. In nearby Indialantic, the park is open from 7:00 a.m. to 7 p.m. As you’d expect the beautiful beaches are the focal point where swimmers, surfers, and fishermen gather. The park also offers pavilions and BBQ grills for picnicking fun! If you bring your canine friends, you’ll need to keep them on a leash, have proof of a current rabies vaccination, and clean up as needed.

Nearby, in Cape Canaveral, Manatee Sanctuary Park awaits with the promise of an up-close encounter with the Florida iconic marine mammal – the beloved manatees. The large, lumbering manatees are herbivores which swim slowly, grazing on the vegetation found in the warm Florida estuaries. With ten acres, complete with boardwalks and trails, you are sure to get a glimpse of the charming manatees.

When you are ready to take a break from the beach, head to the Turkey Creek Nature Sanctuary, where you’ll find more than 100 acres to explore. This natural habitat features local plants and wildlife and is a favorite of families who just want to explore and perhaps get a glimpse of some of Florida’s famous creatures. You and your family can explore the sanctuary’s nature center, enjoy a ranger-led tour or program, or visit one of the Native American archaeological sites.

Just south of Satellite Beach, you’ll find Gleason Park. Located in Indian Harbour Beach, the Park offers a scenic spot to explore on the Indian River side of the island. In the Park, you’ll find a full-size swimming pool to enjoy, as well as playgrounds, trails, and picnic areas. Plus, depending on when you visit, the Park often hosts, fairs, art shows, and other special events.

What could be more fun than a family visit to the Brevard Zoo. The zoo is home to rhinos, parrots, monkeys, tigers, and exotic animals from around the globe. Located in Melbourne, families can enjoy guided tours, animal exhibits, special programs, a train ride, and even a children’s splash area for cooling down when the temperature rises.

At Eastern State College, you and your family will enjoy a visit to the Astronaut Memorial Planetarium and Observatory with its indoor planetarium, gigantic rooftop telescope, laser show, and IMAX. In addition, the Planetarium and Observatory also offers stargazing events for the whole family after dark.

This is only a sampling of all the family friendly fun to be had and around Satellite Beach, there’s also the Foosaner Art Museum, the American Space Museum, more! If a Satellite Beach home is in your future, call on the Coastal Home Team to help.
